NCDC Raises Alarm as Meningitis Cases Hit 807

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has raised an alarm over a surge in Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) cases, with 807 suspected infections and 74 deaths reported across 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Dr. Jide Idris, the Director General of the NCDC, disclosed that Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto are the most affected states, with Kebbi alone accounting for 248 cases and 26 fatalities. He attributed the outbreak to dry weather conditions and overcrowding, emphasizing the need for early detection, vaccination, and public awareness.

To combat the spread of the disease, the NCDC has deployed Rapid Response Teams to affected areas. These teams are conducting mass vaccinations, strengthening case surveillance, and providing free treatment to those infected.

Dr. Idris urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck, and severe headaches. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene, reducing overcrowding, and promptly reporting suspected cases to the NCDC helpline at 6232.

The NCDC continues to collaborate with state governments and health organizations to curb the outbreak and protect public health.
