
Eid-el-Fitr Holds Sunday As New Moon Is Sighted
The National Moon Sighting Committee has officially confirmed that the new crescent moon has been sighted, signaling the end of Ramadan. Consequently, Muslims across Nigeria and several parts of the world will observe Eid-el-Fitr on Sunday.
The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, made the official announcement on Friday evening. In his statement, he congratulated the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan and urged them to uphold the values of piety, love, and generosity fostered during the holy month.
The sighting of the new moon signifies the commencement of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Eid-el-Fitr, also known as the ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast’, is a significant religious occasion marked by special prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.
State governments and Islamic organizations across Nigeria have already made arrangements for Eid prayers at designated grounds while ensuring adequate security measures are in place for worshippers. Authorities have also called for peaceful celebrations and adherence to safety regulations.
