Abuja, Nigeria – March 28, 2025
A violent confrontation between security forces and members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has left two police officers and a trader dead in Wuse, Abuja. Several officers were also injured, and multiple vehicles were set ablaze during the chaos.
The incident occurred during the IMN’s Arba’een procession, a religious march commemorating the 40th day after Ashura. According to police reports, IMN members allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on a security checkpoint using machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices. In the ensuing violence, two officers were killed, and three others were left unconscious.
A civilian, identified as Amiru Sani, a trader in the area, was fatally shot while attempting to flee the scene. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Maitama District Hospital.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the arrest of several IMN members and assured the public that order had been restored. Commissioner of Police Benneth C. Igweh condemned the attack, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
However, IMN representatives have disputed the police’s account, claiming their procession was peaceful until security forces intervened. They allege that multiple IMN members were killed and injured in the clash.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident as tensions remain high in the capital.
