ABUJA — The FCT Water Board has announced a major maintenance operation that will affect water supply to several districts across the Federal Capital Territory starting next week.
In a statement released yesterday, the Water Board’s Managing Director, Engineer Aisha Mohammed, explained that the scheduled maintenance is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to improve water quality and distribution efficiency throughout the city.
“We will be conducting essential upgrades to our treatment facilities and distribution network from March 28 to April 2,” Mohammed stated. “During this period, residents in affected areas may experience reduced water pressure or temporary interruptions in service.”
The maintenance will primarily impact Maitama, Wuse II, Garki II, and parts of Asokoro and Jabi districts. The Water Board has advised residents in these areas to store adequate water to last through the maintenance period.
Community leaders have expressed concerns about the timing of the maintenance operation. Chief Samuel Adewale, Chairman of the Garki II Residents Association, told The Capital Mirror, “While we understand the necessity of infrastructure maintenance, scheduling such work during the dry season puts additional strain on households already dealing with water scarcity.”
The Water Board has assured residents that water tankers will be deployed to strategic locations in affected areas to provide emergency supply during the maintenance period. Special provisions have also been made for hospitals, schools, and other critical facilities.
Dr. Fatima Bello, an environmental health expert at the University of Abuja, emphasized the importance of the maintenance work despite the temporary inconvenience. “Regular system upgrades are essential for maintaining water quality and preventing more serious infrastructure failures that could lead to prolonged outages or contamination issues,” she noted.
The Water Board has established a dedicated helpline (08000-WATERHELP) for residents to report emergencies or request water tanker services during the maintenance period.
Residents can check the detailed maintenance schedule and affected areas on the FCT Water Board’s website or through their recently launched mobile application.
