President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Dr. Ngozi Odu, amid escalating political tensions and security concerns in the state.
In a nationwide broadcast, President Tinubu stated that the decision was necessary to restore stability following months of political crises that have threatened governance and public order in Rivers. He cited reports of violent clashes, threats of impeachment, and deep divisions within the state government as key reasons for the intervention.
“The Federal Government cannot stand by while Rivers State descends into chaos. In the interest of national security and the protection of democratic institutions, I have approved the immediate suspension of the state’s leadership and imposed a state of emergency,” Tinubu announced.
With this declaration, Rivers State will now be under the control of a federally appointed administrator until further notice. Security agencies have also been deployed to ensure peace and order.
Reactions to the decision have been mixed, with opposition parties condemning the move as an attack on democracy, while supporters of the ruling party argue that it was necessary to prevent a complete breakdown of governance.
Further updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
