To revive Nigeria’s struggling textile industry, the Federal Government has inaugurated the Sector Skills Council for fashion, leatherwork, and accessories—its 19th sectoral council—bringing together experts from both public and private sectors.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Bugaje, expressed concern over Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported textiles.

He emphasized that the council’s primary goal is to reposition the industry as a key player in the nation’s economic growth.

“If this sector can organize and ensure proper certification of artisans and apprentices, it has the potential to become a major revenue generator for Nigeria,” Bugaje stated, urging the 30-member council to leverage their expertise in advancing the government’s renewed hope agenda.

Chairperson of the council, Mrs. Funmi Ladipo, called for collaboration among members, pledging to drive initiatives that will standardize skills, bridge gaps, create employment opportunities, and influence policy in the textile and leather industries.

At the event, Hajiya Hurayya Lawal, wife of the Zamfara State Governor, was honored as the National Patron of the Council for her efforts in empowering young girls with vocational skills.

The Dangote Academy also received a certificate of recognition for its contributions to the skills development sector.

With the inauguration of this council, the government signals its commitment to revitalizing technical and vocational education, positioning the textile industry for growth, and reducing dependence on imports.
