Abuja, Nigeria – March 12, 2025
The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other respondents to file their defence in a lawsuit brought against them by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The legal battle stems from a ₦100 billion defamation suit filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. She alleges that Senate President Akpabio and his senior legislative aide, Mfon Patrick, made defamatory statements that severely damaged her reputation.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu, presiding over the case, issued the directive, reinforcing the importance of due process in the ongoing legal dispute. This comes after a recent ruling by the same court, which restrained the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from taking disciplinary action against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing concerns over fairness.
Legal experts believe the outcome of this lawsuit could impact the Senate’s internal dynamics and broader political developments in Nigeria. The next hearing is scheduled where the court will review the responses from Akpabio and the other defendants.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
