
ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon Set to Unite the Region in Celebration of 50th Anniversary
The stage is set for the highly anticipated ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon, scheduled to take place on March 1, 2025. As part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the marathon aims to celebrate unity, athleticism, and regional cooperation through sports.
Thousands Expected to Participate
The marathon will feature two race categories: a 21-kilometre half marathon and a 5-kilometre race, drawing thousands of runners from across the region. The event is expected to attract both elite runners and amateur fitness enthusiasts, reinforcing its status as a major sporting spectacle in West Africa.
Speaking about the preparations, Race Director Gabriel Okon emphasized the crucial role of volunteers in ensuring the smooth execution of the marathon.
Marathon is not just about the runners; it’s about the team behind the scenes. Volunteers are the backbone of any successful race, from registration and logistics to hydration stations and medical support. Their role is invaluable in making the event smooth and enjoyable for everyone,” Okon stated.
Strong Volunteer Interest
With applications for volunteers opening on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria office in Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, there has already been an overwhelming response from various sectors. Retired directors in the ministry, elite athletes, and community fitness trainers have expressed their eagerness to contribute to the event’s success.
“The enthusiasm we are seeing from volunteers is inspiring. This is more than just a race it’s a movement that brings people together for a greater cause, Okon noted.
Promoting Health, Youth Empowerment, and Regional Unity
Beyond being a competitive sporting event, the ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon is a platform to promote health, fitness, and youth empowerment. It also aims to strengthen the spirit of regional unity through sports.
Adding to the excitement, the marathon will offer over $71,000 in prize money, further attracting top-tier athletes while encouraging broad participation from fitness lovers of all levels.
