MTN Nigeria Faces Backlash Over Data Tariff Hike Amid N519.1 Billion Loss
MTN Nigeria has reported a staggering loss of N519.1 billion in the first half of 2024, largely attributed to the country’s record-high inflation and the significant depreciation of the naira. These economic factors have led to increased operational costs and substantial foreign exchange losses, severely affecting the telecommunications giant’s financial stability.
Regulatory Approval and Controversial Tariff Increase
In an effort to offset these losses, MTN Nigeria sought approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 100% increase in service tariffs. The NCC, aiming to strike a balance between operator sustainability and consumer protection, approved only a 50% increase. However, reports suggest that MTN Nigeria implemented a 200% increase in data tariffs, far exceeding the regulatory authority’s sanctioned limit.
Consumer Backlash and Advocacy Response
The steep price hike has triggered widespread criticism from consumers and advocacy groups. Many argue that the increase is unjustifiable and places an undue financial burden on subscribers. Consumer protection organizations have called for regulatory intervention to ensure that telecommunications services remain affordable.
Critics acknowledge that service adjustments may be necessary to sustain quality and operational efficiency. However, they stress that any changes should be gradual and within regulatory limits to prevent excessive strain on consumers, many of whom are already grappling with the economic downturn.

- It’s unfair and should be reversed
- A moderate increase is acceptable, but 200% is excessive
- MTN has the right to adjust tariffs given their financial struggles
- I don’t use MTN, so this doesn’t affect me
