Resident Doctors in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) hospitals have made a remarkable performance and raised the bar of excellence in the just concluded April-May 2024 West African and National Postgraduate College Examinations across various faculties of Medicine at first attempt.
This was disclosed during a formal introduction of the thirteen (13) successful candidates, who sat for the exams to the Mandate Secretary, FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) at both West African and National levels respectively.
Receiving the Doctors in her office, the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, expressed excitement over the outstanding performance of the Resident Doctors thereby making the FCT Administration proud and sustaining the required and needed standard in medical practice.
Fasawe in the same vein, enjoined the Resident Doctors to give their best and put the knowledge they have acquired in the course of their training in various fields of practice into good use so as to make FCT the place to be for training in order to set the pace for other states.
According to her, putting the knowledge they have acquired as Resident Doctors will add value to the FCT Health system and by extension, the humanity.
She enjoined them not to join the band of medical exodus from the country but rather pass the knowledge they have acquired to other trainees who will come under them.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Acting Director-General, Health Management Board, Dr. Olugbenga Bello, while introducing the 13 successful candidates to the Mandate Secretary said the aim of “Residency Training Programme is to develop skilled specialists in various areas of medicine to enable optimal care in all hospitals under the supervision of other fully independent doctors”.
Bello said that 8 of them sat for the Membership Level Examinations while 5 took the Fellowship (final) level and passed at their first attempt in the examinations bringing the number to 13 successful candidates from faculties of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry Anesthesiology and Family Medicine at both levels of the exams.
The Director-General appreciated the FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike for approving the recruitment of 352 health workers and 60 external Resident Doctors to compliment the already existing FCT Health Workforce; saying the gesture with other machineries in place will give FCT Health system a new face in line with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of President Bola Tinubu’s Administration.
