ABUJA – HipCity Innovation Centre is calling on the government to prioritise a review of the Abuja Masterplan due to a severe lack of affordable housing, particularly affecting the urban poor and lower-middle class.
The city’s population has exceeded initial estimates, leading to a significant gap between the supply of housing and its affordability.
The Executive Director of the HipCity Innovation Centre, Bassey Bassey, highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of “informality” within the masterplan.
He emphasised that it is crucial to review the Abuja Masterplan comprehensively and promptly, urging the government to organize a meeting with stakeholders for this purpose.
While some may argue that there is enough housing available in Abuja, the key question raised is who this housing is actually meant for. Bassey stressed the need to bridge the disparity between the aspirations and the reality of housing in Abuja.
He suggested that the Renewed Hope Administration should promote adaptability and inclusiveness to create a fairer and more prosperous future for all residents of Abuja.
Bassey, emphasised that every resident, regardless of their socioeconomic status, should have access to decent housing and essential amenities.
